Application of Nuclear Energy in Space Missions

Abstract

The only propulsive source of energy which has been used for many years in space missions is chemical energy. However, there are other sources of energy and different methods to apply these sources for space propulsion. In recent years it is evident that, technically, it is possible to use the more powerful Nuclear energy instead of chemical energy for space propulsion .This article deals with the most feasible and practical method to use fission energy in form of a solid core Nuclear Reaction and reconsiders all general design characteristics and carries out a rough calculation for design of a "Nuclear Rocket" capable of performing space missions.
