The Agha Jari Formation in the Ardakan Syncline has been measured and described in
some detail. The formation is for the most part composed of continental deposits of red marls and sandstone. As such the formation is more similar so the type section at Agha Jari oilfield than it is to the more marine type formation seen in Costal Fars Province.
The provenance of the sands in the formation is thouht to be from an area to the north
and north east. The presence of abundant chert pebbles in several of the sandstone beds suggests this since the main source of cherts in the area is form the radiolarite series which is seen as a longitudinal zone in the Arsenjan area paralleling the regional strike.
