Quality Characteristics of Yaftabad's Ground Water of Tehran, Iran.

Abstract

Human health may be affected by ingested water directly or in food, by
using it in personal hygiene or for agriculture, industry or recreation,
and by living near it. Two main categories of water-associated health hazards
are biological agents and chemical pollutants, usually resulting from discharges of waste waters (mainly domestic and industry) •
This laboratory analyses aimed at gathering data and information about
quality characteristics(chemical & bacteriological aspects of Tehran ground
water aquifer in Yaftebad region (south;"'west of Tehran) and its degree of
safety.
Sampling, chemical analyses and bacteriological assessment were carried
out on 73 wells from 22 June 1977 to 21 Sept. 1977 according to latest edition
of u.S. Standard Method for the Examination of Water and Wastewater
(1975 A.P.H.A., A.W.W.A. & W.P.,C.F.) and A.S.T.M. Standards.
The laboratory tests showed that about 13.7 percent of total wells
water(ten wells out of 73 wells) have been contaminated by bacteria(Maximum Total Coliform M.P.N. and Fecal Coliform M.P.N. were 750 and 210 per 100 ml respectively) .
Considering the maximum desirable Concentration of 0.2 mg/l as MBAS
for detergent in drinkign water as W.H.O. Standard, this study showed that
24.44 percent of samples were exceeding the mentioned standard, (with a range between zero and 1.8431 mg/l and standard deviation + 0.276~ and mean 0.1825 mg/l) •
Arithmetic mean of tested parameter on 73 wells water showed that:
-Yaftabad ground water may be classified as Sulfated Water.
-With regard to the Wilcox classification, Yaftabad ground waters may
be classified as second class water to be consumed for agricultural purposes.
-As defined by the M. Plotninkov Standard Industrial Classification and
with respect to significant indicators of water quality characteristics, it
can be concluded that the quality of Yaftabad ground water cause it to be a
third class water and one must be practiced water-softening to produce
waters acceptable for industrial usage.
