Water Resources Utilization in Iran in the Past

Abstract

he careless application of Technology and poor planning have had deteriorating
effects on the economy, agricultural production and social structure
in Iran. The country, where the exportation of excess agricultural
production brought a major portion of her income some 20 years ago, had to
import more than 75 per cent of the food needs of her prople in recent years.
Some national plans or major projects were the causes of such deterioration.
For example, the Persian Land Reform of 1962 resulted in deserting the greenery, while 'desert greening' through irrigation projects of some large dams left many farmers jobless. Ignoring the social impacts of these experiments on the farmers has been a prime reason f o r their failures.
