This paper is a state-of-the-art in
sulphur-asphalt (SA) design technology
based on a comprehensive analysis of
current practice and technical literature,
in order to investigate the possible
use of SA pavements in Iran. In
this paper, the major aspects(material,
technology, properties, production, placement,
quality assurance, design, and
field varification) of SA pavements
are considered. Fer those desiring..
more detailed informatin, a listing of
references has been included.
The use of sulphur in asphalt pavements
has received considerable attention
over the past decade, largely due
to asphalt costs, dwindling hydrocarbon
resources, and surplus sulphur accumulation
from oil refineries. The SA pavements
represent a viable alternative
to the conventional asphalt pavements
and they offer potential performance
and economic advantages. Extensive laboratory,
field, and analytical investigation
have been conducted to verify
the design technology, The first field
project of SA pavement was constructed
in Canada in 1974. Since that time ,many
other projects have been constructed
in Canada, the United States of America,
Europe and Mid East.
sulphur-asphalt mixes have been found
to have lower temperature suseptibility,
increased Marshall stability, and
increased resilient modulus of elasticity
than conventional asphalt pavements.
Production, transport, placement,
and compaction of SA mixes is done with
conventional methods and equipment.
Due to the potential advantages of
SA pavements, and due to the availability
of sulphur and asphalt in Iran ,its
use is highly recommended especially
in arid areas and where good quality
aggregates are not readily available
but sands are available.
