Abstract

Geological and topographic maps are
frequently used in regional planning, as well as in constructional and mining projects in Iran. As the
preparation of geological maps has been mostly manual and based on personal judgments,
different types of errors have been introduced into some maps during field mapping, interpretation
and cartographic works. Another group of errors are generated due to the lack of national
standards or procedures for preparation of geological maps.
To unravel the sources of errors in the Iranian
geological maps, all the printed 1 :250,000 geological maps of the five western provinces of Iran (Ham, Hamadan, Kermanshah, Kordestan,
and Lorestan) have been re-evaluated and compared with each other and available
international
standards .Following The classification of these errors, a guideline is suggested to minimize these deficiencies in future
maps
