Abstract

Pinch Technology has proved to be a powerful
tool for analyzing process industries, especially in
terms of heat recovery system efficiency. In this respect, heat exchanger network area algorithm is
getting more and more accurate everyday.
In this research, the area algorithm, which had
previously been developed by the author and work based on stream allowable pressure drops, is
improved and becomes more accurate. For this, different relationships for variation of stream
physical properties (i.e., density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and viscosity) with temperature changes (presented by the author in
previous paper) are used and a new area algorithm introduced.
This algorithm allows the physical properties to be updated in each enthalpy intervals, on the
composite curves, and the calculated area of each interval using updated values. Therefore, the
effect of temperature changes, between those of the stream supply and the target are considered in
network area estimation. The new area algorithm
is, then, applied to a case
and a 10%
improvement, was observed compared to the previous algorithm.
