Abstract

Many of the current square root algorithms require an initial estimation of the result in order to start the computational process. Usually, for this purpose, a ROM based lookup table is employed, which occupies a relatively large space. In this paper an improved routine is presented which performs the initial estimation for the square root of real integer values with an error of less than six
percent. In addition, an implementation method using FPGAs for floating point operands is proposed.
