Bore Propagation due to sudden dam failure

Abstract

The problem of creation and subsequent propagation of bore has been examined and studied by a number of investigators Who They Were interested in unsteady flow
problems for which sudden changes in either flow or depth or both occur.
In this paper, the shock Conditions and the method of Characteristics for Predicting the downstream flooding produced by a dam failure. In the dam-break Problem when there is some water initially below issued the dam, we determined the
solution for bore propagation by assuming instant formation of the bore.
The method used in this paper was based on a rectangular, horizontal channel for which the boundary resistance was assumed to be zero. The analytical Solution of this problem is compared with the experimental data which are in good agrement.
Using only a hand-held calculator and the dimensionless graphs presented herein, the engineers may within minutes prodoce forecasts of the dam-break floodwave, shock speed, maximum height of the bore, discharges, and travel times.
