INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION OF BISPHENOL-A

Abstract

Bisphenol A, 2,2-Bis(4,4-DihyroxYPhenyl
propane) is the raw material for the
production of important synthetic polymers
such as epoxyresins, polycarbonates
and polysulphones. During the last
twenty years the anual production of
bisphenol-A has been continuously increasing.
A,B,C cqrves shows the consumption
pattern of bisphenol-A (19601972) •
Epoxy resins are used for the production
of adhessives, electrical and
electronics pieces, reinforced plastics
etc. This paper is based on the research
work carried out on the bisphenol-A
industrial production methods.
the work was done in the industrial
organic chemistry laboratory, faculty
of engineerinq , tehran university.
Bisphenol-A was Produced from the
Reaction between phenol and acetone
at 50-90 °c in the presence of dry HCl
Gas (Condensating agent). Mercaptan
catalysts with general formulas(HS)n
R (C -OH) or Cation Exchange resins
were used in this reaction. A Suitable
purification method was worked out.
The results were satisfactory and a
pilot plant scale production is being
considered.
