A proper linear fuzzy PI controller is designed in order to achieve a response with specific overshoot and settling time for higher order systems. First, a new design method of this type controllers is given for a second order systems. Then, its extension is discussed for third order systems. Finally, with the ideas developed, the given design algorithm is generalized to higher order systems.

Hippocampus is an important structure of the human brain limbic system. The variations in the volume and architecture of this structure have been related to certain neurological diseases.
Accurate and reproducible volume try of hippocampus from MRI is required for diagnosis and treatment of patients. This can be done using the following three steps: 1) determining hippocampus approximate location 2) determining its accurate boundaries and 3) calculating its volume. This paper presents an automated method for the first step. The proposed approach employs a searchbased vision for information extraction from MRI and an expert system for information analysis.
In the development of the expert system a shell of expert systems named VP¬EXPERT is used. Information analysis is done using rules that are based on anatomy and symmetry of the human brain. Results show that the proposed approach is promising for object localization from complex medical images. The approach
has been applied to 128 images from 6 patients. In these studies, all of the images without hippocampus were correctly identified. In addition, in 58.3% of the images containing hippocampus, the structure was properly localized.

This paper presents the hardware design of the DES encryption and decryption systems and try to verify their performances. The hardware uses a clock rate of 20 MHz to encrypt an 80 Mbps input stream. This is twice as fast compared to existing hardware. The system was designed and its performance was verified using VHDL standard tools. The advantages of using VHDL are that it simplifies the design and verification procedures, and enables one to implement the system into a single integrated circuit.

The paper investigates the influence of transverse reinforcement on bond strength of splices. It presents an equation to calculate the bond strength of splices confined and not confined by transverse reinforcement. The equation is given for normal strength and high strength concrete (HSC). For 138 normal strength concrete test results reported in the literature, the mean value of test/calculated bond strength is 1.00 with a standard deviation of 0.1 O.
These values indicate a significant
improvement in the prediction of the bond strength when compared them with the values obtained from other models. The comparison of the calculated values with HSC test results shows that the equation can also be used for the case of HSC with a good accuracy.

Centrifugal decanters are used for the separation of different grades of starch. There are many' problems associated with the use of these decanters such as high investment, maintenance and operation costs, and the necessity of employing

Therefore, multicyclones were designed to
replace these decanters. The advantages of these multicyclones are lower costs,
absence of any moving parts, ease of
construction and the possibility of using different materials of construction. The drawback of these multicyclones is their lack of flexibility in coping with different operating conditions. Overall, good results were obtained from this substitution.

The presence of notable amount of copper (0.16%) in Sarcheshmeh copper plant tailing necessitates a systematic studies on the feed, concentrate and tailing in order to evaluate the copper lost to the tailing. The statistical studies carried out in the last few year clearly shows that the variation in the feed grade, mineralogical nature, the type of copper minerals and
their proportion and the amount of oxidized copper ore are the reasons responsible for low recovery and such lost to the tailing. A systematic sampling from different parts of the plant is also shows that the low performance of the machines and unoptimized effective parameters are responsible for the copper lost to the tailing. In this study a representative sample has been prepared and subjected to detailed characterization studies to recover the copper from tailing. Subsequently a set of flotation experiments has been carried out and a final concentrate assayed 2.35% copper with recovery of 55.8%.

to tackle the detrimental deterioration of the steels in concrete, by reducing the cost of repair and increasing the life of
concrete constructions. In this paper the behavior of the corrosion reinforcement in concrete is investigated using two identical Calomel Reference Electrode Potential Monitoring Technique. Maps belonging to potential variations with respect to time have been presented as contour maps with a color spectrum. This technique has been shown to be
capable of indicating the corrosion of
reinforcement, and can be used as an early  warning system in order to prevent catastrophic failures in concrete constructions.

In the present paper, augmentation of hear transfer during condensation of R¬22 inside horizontal tubes with helically coiled inserts has been investigated
experimentally. For the sake of
comparison, the data for plain tube were also collected. The experimental setup which was used in this investigation was basically a well instrumented vapor compression systems. The test condenser consisted of four separate coaxial double pipe condensers assembled in series and called as "test sections". It was a counter¬flow heat exchanger where R22 would condense inside the inner tube by rejecting heat to the coolant water flowing in the annulus. Experimental data for tubes with coiled wire inserts were obtained for three different wire diameters of 0.65, 1.0 and 1.5 mm with a coil pitch of 10 mm and three different coil pitches of 6.5, 10 and 13 mm for the wire of 1 mm diameter. The results show that, in general, the insertion of a helically coiled wire inside the condenser tube increases the heat transfer coefficient, significantly. The gain in heat transfer coefficient is not very consistent for a particular coiled wire and it is a
complex function of vapor Reynolds number and coiled wire geometry. The best performing roughed tube in the high vapor quality region, increased the sectional heat transfer coefficient by as much as 100% above the plain tube values on a nominal area basis. No correlation exists for prediction of heat transfer coefficient during condensation of vapors inside a tube with coiled wire inserts. A generalized correlation was developed on the basis of the experimental data of this investigation.

Today hydrostatic transmission is widely used in heavyduty vehicles specially the ones used for agriculture and construction purposes. This study has focused on the design and improvement of the performance of these transmissions with significant attention to the operation and control of positive displacement pumps which is their most important component. These pumps are generally swashplate type axial piston pumps. As
part of the study of control methods applied to the pump, it is necessary to extract and linearize the dynamic equations of the system if possible. Pumping action of the piston produces a torque on the swash plate. This torque is the most important term in the equations of motion in the swash plate. The describing equation of this torque is nonlinear and partially discontinous. The equation is a function of geometrical characteristics of the pump and operation conditions of the system. The model is obtained in general form, but it can be
liearized for commony used series of axial piston pumps and give the linear parameters of the equation of motion of
the swash plate. In addition, the in formations of a special kind of pump is
given for assessment and comparison of model parameters. Finally the model is
compared with Man ring and Johnson's model (1994).

A method for theoretical estimation of RCurves is derived. At first, the general approach is determined using some essential assumptions. Then a model consisting of successive stages of discrete movements is introduced which in turn results to a recursive equation. By solving the derived equation, RCurves can be calculated thereby using results from a simple tension test. A quantitative
investigation is then accomplished in mode I utilizing a case study on Aluminum Alloy AA 7075 T6. Calculated theoretical Curves are compared with experimental ones. It is observed that the two curves are
reasonably compatible. The anticipation of both curves for instability points are also compared showing a great extent of consistency.

The free and forced nonlinear vibration of a fixed orthotropic annular plate with elastic ring is studied. By use of RitzKantorovich averaging method the governing nonlinear partial differential equations for ax symmetric vibration of the annular plates are converted to a set of ordinary differential equations which form a nonlinear Eigen value problem. Solution of the related initial value problem is obtained by applying parallel shooting method. The results show the effect of stiffness
coefficient on the dynamic response of
orthotropic plate. The method utilized in this paper can be applied to many
differential eigenvalue problems with piecewise continuous functions.

Erosion due to cavitation has been studied with several methods in many countries. In this paper, test methods which has more applications than other methods are investigated and their advantages and disadvantages are
introduced. Followed by discussion of
results, the causes of difference between results obtained from cavitation tests and practical cases are mentioned. Effort to
eliminate this difference can be a base for future development of these tests. The results of the present study is used for cavitation testing in centrifugal pumps. The test rig is designed and the
installation is under construction.
